The King of Bavaria ( German: König von Bayern) was a title held by the hereditary Wittelsbach rulers of Bavaria in the state known as the Kingdom of Bavaria from 1805 until 1918, when the kingdom was abolished. Initially a powerful duchy in the Holy Roman empire, Bavaria became a moderately powerful kingdom under the reforms of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in 1805, and played its part in Central European politics until the conclusion of the First World War saw the kingdom abolished and a federal Germany formed, of which it was a constituent part.
