Our history. History of UMIST. The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) can trace its origins to the Manchester Mechanics' Institution, founded in 1824 as part of a national movement for the education of working men.

In 1966, the MCST became the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). By the 1990s most links to the University of Manchester had been relinquished, and UMIST was to all intents and purposes an independent university.

The Department has been through a number of different guises; in 1918 the Technical School became the Municipal College of Technology before changing again to become The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in 1966.
