Shimo (霜?), dubbed as Titanus Shimo, is the secondary antagonist of the 2024 sci-fi action crossover film, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the fifth instalment of the MonsterVerse franchise. She is an enormous cryokinetic Titan with ice-based attacks who acts as the unwilling servant of Skar King leading him in ruling over a clan of primate-like Titans due to being controlled by pain inflicted by a mysterious crystal in his possession.

    Development

The design of Shimo went through several phases of drafting. Initially planned as an ice version of Godzilla, the lack of information with this concept led to the idea being dropped. According to designer Jared Krichevsky, Shimo's intial designs were too "dragony" and it took a long time before he finally came up with the right design. Shimo's final design was based on several real-world animals: Shimo's overall appearance is based on Komodo dragons and polar bears, and facial features modeled after chameleons. Shimo’s existence was first alluded to in the 2022 Call of Duty collaboration with Godzilla vs. Kong where shimo was depicted in a cave painting battling Godzilla.

    Appearance

Shimo is a colossal quadrupedal creature, boasting a powerful, robust frame covered in dense reptilian scutes and a striking purplish-white coloration. Shimo’s head possesses two forward-facing eyes and a crest adorned with vibrant dark blue purple spikes. Shimo also possesses a row of translucent purple spikes running down her back and an extremely lengthy tail ending in four thagomizers. Her teeth are surprisingly small for her size and limited in number compared to other titans like Godzilla but are still pointed and sharp, indicating she is either a carnivore, an omnivore or a piscivore.

    Roar

Shimo's roar can be heard in the first few parts of the video, shortly after she was released from her prison at the behest of Skar King.

At first, Shimo appeared to be a ruthless and aggressive creature, violently causing widespread destruction and attacking anything around her. However, it quickly becomes clear that Shimo does not do this willingly as exemplified when she struggled and hesitated before being forced into firing the ice beam at Kong during their first encounter and then again later on at the Iwi stronghold. She is little more than a weapon-slave of Skar King who inflicts her with debilitating pain if she doesn't obey him and as a result she secretly harbours an intense hatred of him.

When finally released from her bondage, Shimo noticeably becomes much more noble and righteous when liberated from Skar King's influence, no longer posing as a threat to the Kongs and even teaming up with Godzilla, Kong, and Suko to defeat the Skar King. After killing the Skar King as vengeance for controlling her, Shimo appears to be very friendly and loyal towards Kong and Suko, allowing them to let them ride on her back willingly and showed affection as Kong petted her head like a dog.

Not much is known about Shimo's origins, but in the past according to Iwi prophecy, Shimo was once a peaceful and benevolent Titan with cryokinetic powers who was captured by the Skar King and was controlled by him using a blue crystal that would force Shimo to do Skar Kings bidding and cause torture to Shimo, at some point forcing Shimo to start t...

    Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted

As Kong investigated a bone-filled cave in the Hollow Earth, he uncovered several massive cave paintings depicting different monsters. The last displayed a battle between Godzilla and Shimo.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Following a battle between the Skar King and Kong, the older ape revealed a crystal at the end of his Whipslash. At sight of this, several of the Skar King's subjects began to heave vines, dropping two massive boulders over a river of lava on one side of the Skar King's prison, revealing a large cave behind the lavafall. The Skar King pointed the crystal at Kong again, and Shimo emerged from the freshly revealed cave, roaring as almost every ape in the vicinity fled. Kong stared at her and prepared for a fight, and the Skar King waved the crystal at her again. Shimo roared in pain and slammed her head against the ground, before she finally took aim at Kong, firing the ice breath at him. Kong dodged the initial blast, and blocked the second with his axe. However, ice slowly encased Kong's arm, forcing the ape to drop his newly acurriered axe and escape. After the Skar King learned the location of the Iwi’s walls hiding exits from Hollow Earth, the ape had Shimo released from her shackles, only to mount Shimo's back. Now brandishing Kong's axe, the Skar King rode Shimo towards the wall, accompanied by five other apes. Suko spotted the party as they were nearing the wall, and he traveled back to warn Kong. While Kong, after having been warned, is off on his quest to recruit Godzilla, the Skar King breaks down the wall, and he, Shimo, and the rest of his apes enter the Iwi’s domain. The Skar King, noticing the Iwi attempting to seal the entrances, used the crystal yet again, pointing it at a pair of quartz pyramids, to which Shimo shot another ice beam which froze the pyramids in place. The seven Titans advanced, but were ambushed by a legion of Vertacines, lead by Trapper. The creatures swarmed the invaders, distracting the apes. The Skar King repeatedly jabbed the crystal at the bio-electric fliers, forcing Shimo to freeze them all. In the midst of the chaos, Kong and Godzilla arrive from Egypt, crashing down into Hollow Earth like a meteor. The two duos rushed at one another right as the ice holding off the pyramids gave way, completely negating the gravity in the area. Shimo crashed into Godzilla in the air, but Godzilla was able to push Shimo down and attack Shimo again as Shimo briefly pursued Kong. Shimo froze Godzilla with the ice beam, only to cease fire after being attacked by Mothra, allowing Godzilla to free himself and tackle Shimo. Soon, the gravity restored itself, and the four warring Titans fell into a portal to the surface. In Rio De Janeiro, waves in the sea all turn into ice, which is shattered as the Skar King and Shimo both fly out onto land. After taking a moment to admire the sun, the Skar King used the crystal to force Shimo to fire her beam into the sky, covering the sun with a large cloud, before having her fire into the city. However, Kong and Godzilla then arrived and resumed the battle. The Skar King tries to get Shimo to attack Kong, but shimo is pushed into a building by Godzilla as the two saurians resumed their duel. When the Skar King is knocked to the ground by Kong, the evil ape used the crystal once more, and Shimo's tail smacked Kong across the city. Shimo then fired on Kong with the ice breath, which Kong blocked with the B.E.A.S.T. Glove. With Shimo and Kong locked in a stalemate, Godzilla breaks the Whipslash, detaching the crystal from the end. Godzilla then fired on Shimo with his atomic breath, and tackled her off Kong, freeing the ape to resume fighting the Skar King. The apes both went berserk, fighting tooth and nail over the crystal. However, before either could get a solid grasp on the crystal, Suko arrived with Kong's axe and shattered it. The Skar King is then tagged team by Kong, Godzilla, and even Suko. Shimo watched this intently, prominent curiosity on her face, as the Skar King angrily pointed at Shimo and Kong, trying to make Shimo attack Kong. Shimo then joins in on the team-up, freezing the Skar King over entirely. Kong grabs the Skar King's frozen body, staring him in the face, before smashing him into pieces upon the ground, finally ending his reign. Some time later, Kong and Suko then returned to the Skar King’s old prison, triumphantly riding upon Shimo's back. They hopped off of Shimo, and Kong offered her a few head pets, before all three of them roared in victory before Kong’s new tribe.

    Immense Strength

Shimo is arguably one of the strongest Titans in existence, with only evolved Godzilla can match her strength and Kong show not able to fight shimo in physical strength, shimo was able to throw Godzilla into the air after he tackled her to the ground when shimo attempted to attack Kong . Kong, even after have B.E.A.S.T. Glove ,had great difficulty even defending himself from shimo, as Shimo grabbed his B.E.A.S.T. Glove and threw Kong through buildings. Shimo showed its impressive strength by effortlessly bearing the weight of Kong, along with additional loads such as the battle B.E.A.S.T. Glove, Kong’s Axe , and the presence of Suko, all positioned on shimo's neck.

    Intelligence

Despite not being one of her primary attributes, Shimo demonstrates a reasonable level of intelligence. Shimo understands the Skar King's commands to attack other Titans and initiate a new ice age. However, after gaining her freedom, Shimo defies the Skar King's orders and instead followed Godzilla's command to help Kong and Godzilla in ending his reign of terror. Additionally, Shimo's choice to be with Kong further showcases her intelligence in recognising a reliable ally and companion.

    Frost Bite Blast

Shimo is capable of unleashing an incredibly powerful, concentrated beam of freezing ice known as a "Frost Bite blast". This beam has extremely low temperatures, capable of freezing in the Atomic level in which is immensely strong. It froze Titans such as evolved Godzilla for a short time and the Skar King completely solid . It also is able to make Kong's right arm have severe frostbite and temporarily numb, with Kong needing Monarch to put the B.E.A.S.T. Glove on his arm to help him with the Frostbite.

    Skar King

Millennia ago, Skar discovered a crystal that causes such agonizing pain to Shimo that she had to obey him. After Godzilla defeated Skar's first attempted conquest, Shimo was sent with the other Great Apes into dungeon in Subterranean Earth, a level deeper underneath Hollow Earth. Thus, it can be inferred that Shimo was resentful at Skar for not just enslaving Shimo, but also causing Shimo to be imprisoned with his subjects. While it may have been for practical purposes, Skar kept Shimo chained behind a lavafall; the fact that intense heat causes her discomfort and pain may mean that Skar also chose the location to torture her, which fits his sadistic personality. Once freed from the chains and barrier of lava, Shimo was fearful, but disobeyed Skar's command to attack, until he used the crystal to make shimo suffer until shimo attacks. Although it served the purpose of faster travel, the way Skar rode Shimo seemed to be another act of dominance from him, and Shimo's body language was that of defeat and misery. Despite Shimo's hatred of Skar, they were able to cooperate exceedingly well in battle, albeit sometimes Shimo would refuse a command until tortured. The fear of the crystal's effects did make her more obedient, as shimo began to follow orders without it being used. Upon the crystal's destruction, Shimo was finally freed, thus finally took revenge against Skar, thus showing that she obviously felt no loyalty to the tyrant that had oppressed her, and upon being unleashed, shimo almost immediately attacked SkarKing.

    Godzilla

While Godzilla imprisoned Shimo with the Skar King and the Great Apes that he lead, Shimo didn't seem to hold any lingering grudge against Godzilla. She did fight him ferociously, however, this was only due to being forced by Skar's control crystal. Once freed, Shimo didn't attack him anymore, nor did she display any aggression. Due to Godzilla's position as King of the Monsters, she perhaps respects him, and because of her intellect, she understands it was only Skar's fault for her imprisonment, therefore Shimo and Godzilla are on peaceful terms.

    Kong

In the Gxk movie Shimo fought Kong upon first meeting, however, she initially refused until the Skar King's crystal compelled her to attack. Even though they fight again during Skar's final attempted uprising, after being freed from the crystal, shimo sees Godzilla charging his atomic breath but instead fires first and executes Skar King with the "Frost Bite Blast" in which Skar, was held up with Kong's gauntlet. Shimo quite likely feels gratitude to Kong for helping emancipate her from Skar's clutches; this appreciation is supported by the fact that shimo willingly allows Kong to ride her, and unlike when Skar did it, she appeared content.

•The cave painting of Shimo seen in Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted first appeared in the Godzilla vs. Kong: Call of Duty crossover event close to two years prior.

•At 162.45 meters tall, Shimo is currently the largest and tallest monster to appear in a MonsterVerse film, surpassing Ghidorah in height by 3.65 meters. However, she is not the longest overall as she is surpassed by the ~258-meter-long Tiamat and ~274-meter-long Na Kika.

•Shimo is the second monster to be a primary antagonist in a MonsterVerse film, after the MUTOs in Godzilla 2014.

•In the film's novelization, Shimo is alluded to be the Titan responsible for aiding Godzilla in trapping Ghidora under Antarctica in ancient times by freezing him with her cryokinetic powers.

•Shimo is the first known Titan to have been confirmed to be responsible for a well-known point in human history, that being the Ice Age.

•The crystal that the Skar King uses to control Shimo resembles the ones found in the subterranean Iwi village. The film's novelization implies the crystal came from Shimo. Also, according to the Godzilla x Kong novelization, it is said that Shimo is not the Mother of all Titans, but rather Shimo is a old female Titan of its own "Shimo" kind. This therefore implies a possibility of more Shimos in existence.
