Nine Inch Nails, commonly abbreviated as NIN, stylized as NIИ, is an American industrial rock band formed in Cleveland in 1988. Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Trent Reznor was the only permanent member of the band until his frequent collaborator, Atticus Ross, joined in 2016.

Namensgebung
Bevor er mit 23 Jahren Nine Inch Nails gründete, hatte Trent Reznor in etlichen lokal bekannten Bands gespielt. Er fühlte sich jedoch nie frei genug, eigene musikalische Ideen in befriedigendem Maße umzusetzen. Wie Reznor auf den Namen Nine Inch Nailskam, erklärt er im folgenden Zitat:

Das erste Album Pretty Hate Machine war musikalisch noch sehr stark vom New Wave der 80er Jahre und von den aufkommenden Synthiesounds beeinflusst, erschien am 20.
