Herzstillstand (englisch cardiac arrest) ist ein Begriff aus der Medizin für das nicht mehr oder nicht mehr ausreichend schlagende Herz. Zu unterscheiden sind dabei zwei Formen:
Als Kreislaufstillstand, häufig mit Herzstillstand gleichgesetzt, bezeichnet man das akute Aufhören der Blutzirkulation [1] durch eine plötzlich eingetretene schwere Störung im Herz-Kreislauf-System. Etwa 10 bis 15 Sekunden nach Eintritt eines Kreislaufstillstands kommt es zur Bewusstlosigkeit und nach 30 bis 60 Sekunden zum Atemstillstand. [2]
