26. Juli 2023 · Fellow - 1967. George C. Pimentel was born in California in 1922. He received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from UCLA in in 1943. The same year, he joined the Manhattan Project at Berkeley. When he understood the implications of the project, he enlisted in the Navy and served until 1946.
He is identified as the father of the chemical laser. His high-speed infrared spectroscopic techniques proved adaptable to the devising of instruments for remotely determining the composition of the atmosphere and surface of Mars, yielding dramatic findings in the space missions of Mariners 6 and 7.
