Biographie. Enfance. Issu d'un milieu modeste, il passe son enfance à Fontenay-sous-Bois, dans la banlieue parisienne. Il vit alors chez ses grands-parents paternels, ses parents s'étant séparés lorsqu'il avait trois ans.

He also received a World Fantasy Award in 1997, entered the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1998, won the Spectrum Grandmaster Award in 2011, and a Chesley Award for lifetime achievement in 2012; in 2011 he was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.
