Pyrénées-Atlantiques. 43° 15′ nord, 0° 50′ ouest. Les Pyrénées-Atlantiques ( /pi.ʁe.ne(z‿)at.lɑ̃.tik/) 1, appelées Basses-Pyrénées jusqu'en 1969, sont un département français situé à l'extrême sud-ouest du territoire de la France métropolitaine, dans la région Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
Pyrénées-Atlantiques is part of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of Southwestern France. It is bordered by the Landes , Hautes-Pyrénées, Gers departments and the Bay of Biscay . It also borders Spain to the south by the provinces of Huesca , Navarre and Gipuzkoa along a coastline with the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
Fourth city in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (after Bordeaux, Limoges and Poitiers), Pau is the prefecture of Pyrénées-Atlantiques and the chief town of four cantons: Canton of Pau-1, formed from part of Pau; Canton of Pau-2, formed from part of Pau and the commune of Idron
Pyrénées-Atlantiques is one of the 83 French departments made during the French revolution, on 4 March 1790, with the name of Basses-Pyrénées. It was created from parts of the old provinces of Guyenne, Béarn, and Gascony. The new department had six districts: Mauléon, Oloron, Orthez, Pau, Saint- Palais and Ustaritz.
