In August 2005, the city was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina, and in the wake of the storm, many thought the facility would have to be demolished. In what became the biggest stadium reconstruction project in American history, the Superdome was reborn.
The most unexpected use came in 2005, when some 30,000 citizens used the stadium as shelter during the Katrina hurricane. The catastrophe saw stadium’s roof seriously damaged and resulted in Superdome’s closure.
