In his widely read treatise The Third Wave: Democratization in the Late Twentieth Century, Samuel P. Huntington identifies a conspicuous accumulation of democratization processes in three waves. As each of the first two waves ebbed, it was followed by an autocratic counterwave (Huntington 1991 ).
