Dorothea Tanning war eine amerikanische Malerin, Bildhauerin und Schriftstellerin. Sie entwarf ebenfalls Bühnenausstattungen und Kostüme für Ballett und Theater. Tanning war ab 1946 mit dem deutschen Künstler Max Ernst verheiratet und schuf wie dieser surrealistische Gemälde. Sie lebte nach dem Tod Max Ernsts 1976 in New York City.
