This is a list of former German colonies owned by states of Germany: Holy Roman Empire and German Confederation. Brandenburg-Prussia. Groß Friedrichsburg (in Ghana ), 1683–1718. Arguin (in Mauritania ), 1685–1721.
In 1934 the former colonies were inhabited by 16,774 Germans, of whom about 12,000 lived in the former Southwest African colony. Once the new owners of the colonies again permitted immigration from Germany, the numbers rose in the following years above the pre–World War I total.
The German colonial empire was an overseas area formed in the late nineteenth century as part of the Hohenzollern dynasty's German Empire. Short-lived colonial efforts by individual German states had occurred in preceding centuries, but Imperial Germany's colonial efforts began in 1883.
