The town became the centre of a new Anglican diocese in 1927 and the foundation stone of the cathedral was laid in 1936. Guildford became a university town in September 1966, when the University of Surrey was established by Royal Charter.

Guildford turned from village into a town in the early 10th century when the English kings were building a network of fortified settlements across the country. These were created as bulwarks against the Danish invaders and it is highly likely that Guildford was made such a fortified settlement.

The modern town can trace its origins to the Roman occupation of Britain, evidence of Roman dwellings having been found throughout the area. By Saxon times a small town was well established and, as the Saxon era ended, William the Conqueror ordered the construction of a castle from which the new order exerted control over the local inhabitants.
