Igarashi's father Tsutomu was a surfer in Japan and a fan of the sport. When his wife Misa found out she was pregnant, the couple quit their jobs in Tokyo and moved to Huntington Beach, California, aka Surf City, with the goal of raising their child to be a competitive surfer.
His father Tsutomu was an avid surfer in Japan and kept his boards freshly waxed once the family settled near Huntington Beach in California. While the elder Igarashi and his friends surfed the waves, the young boy played in the sand on shore.

In 2018 Igarashi chose to represent Japan as a way to honour his Japanese born parents, and the sacrifices they made to allow him to live out his surfing dream. He has a strong connection to his Japanese heritage and at home speaks Japanese with his family.
