Marlborough, town (parish), administrative and historic county of Wiltshire, southern England. It lies on the River Kennet in a valley of the chalky Marlborough Downs (hills). Traces of Neolithic and Roman occupation have been found in the vicinity of the Castle Mound, former site of an 11th-century royal castle.

William the Conqueror moved the mint to it from Bedwyn, and a reference to a bishop being imprisoned in Marlborough is usually taken to mean that he had built a castle, although one is not referred to directly in a document until 1138.
