'may' and 'might' Level: beginner. We use may: when we are not sure about something in the present or future: Jack may be coming to see us tomorrow. (= Perhaps Jack will come to see us tomorrow.) Oh dear! It's half past ten. We may be late for the meeting. (= Perhaps we will be late for the meeting.) She's had no sleep. She may be tired.

In popular usage and speech, may and might are used interchangeably when referring to possibility and probability, but there is a slight difference between the two. May is used to express what is possible, factual, or could be factual.
May expresses a high possibility of something happening, whereas might hints that it might not happen. Both may and might can be used to ask for permission, but use may when giving permission. The subtle difference between words is one of the many reasons the English language is difficult to learn.
We use could, may and might to express degrees of possibility. Many native speakers disagree on which one expresses more or less certainty.
