Der Schutz der RAF-Flugplätze oblag bis 1957 dem zur US Army gehörenden 32nd Anti Aircraft Defense Command (AADCOM). Von 1960 bis 1992 nutzte auch die US Navy Stützpunkte in Großbritannien, insbesondere die Basis am Firth of Clyde in Schottland diente den amerikanischen Atom-U-Booten.
Norfolk besitzt mit der Naval Station Norfolk den größten Marinestützpunkt der Welt, an dem überwiegende Teile der US-Flotte stationiert sind. Darüber hinaus hat die Marinestadt einen imposanten Hafen, in dem nicht nur Segel- und Motorboote, sondern auch große Kreuzfahrtschiffe zu bestaunen sind.

Today, NS Norfolk is situated in the Sewells Point area of the City of Norfolk, near the site of the Civil War battle of the Monitor and Merrimac (CSS Virginia). It is the largest naval installation in the world based on support population and is the home of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet.
