One of the greatest women's sprinters in track and field history, Evelyn Ashford ranked first in the world four times and was the top-ranked American seven times, including four in a row from 1981 to 1984.

The world's top female sprinter of the 1970s, Ashford was a three-year letter winner at UCLA (1976-78) who won four individual national titles and led the Bruins to the 1978 AIAW national team championship. Her career spanned the period from her undergraduate years through three Olympic Games to 1988.
