Bône (, Arabic: عنابة ‘Annāba) was a French département in Algeria which existed between 1955 and 1974. Considered as a French province, Algeria was departmentalised on 9 December 1848. Three civil zones (départements) replaced the three beyliks into which the Ottoman former rulers had divided the territory.

das Département Bône (umfasst die Arrondissements Bône, Guelma, Souk-Ahras und Tébessa) Am 28. August 1955 wurde per Dekret ( no 55-1148) die Gründung von neun neuen Arrondissements festgelegt: im Département Algier: Bouira, Fort-National. im Département Constantine: Aïn Bedia, Mila, Bordj-Bou-Arreridj, Djidjelli.
So it was that Bone became Annaba. The city’s population dipped following the war as most people of European extraction immigrated to France, but Annaba’s charms and attributes soon lured new citizens from across Algeria. Today, Annaba has a population of over 350,000 and highly regarded Annaba University has an enrollment of over 40,000 students.
