In 1623 the new county granted to the Londoners and its fortified city, built across the River Foyle from the recently destroyed settlement, were renamed Londonderry in honour of this association. At this point the city was granted a Royal Charter by King James I. The usage of "Derry" versus "Londonderry" is still controversial.

A charter of 1613 established the county of Londonderry, which comprised the old county, O’Neill lands of Loughinsholin, and small parts of Donegal and Antrim. New towns were established and populated with Scots and English planters.
1956. On February 15, 1956, about a dozen people met at the Leach Library and formed the Londonderry Historical Society. The group defined its mission as the “discovering, procuring, and preserving of whatever may relate to the natural, civil, literary, and ecclesiastical history of the town.”
