Shenyang is situated in the southern portion of the vast Northeast (Manchurian) Plain just north of the Hun River, a major tributary of the Liao River. The city site is a flat, low-lying alluvial plain, although the land rises to the east toward the forested slopes of the Changbai Mountains.
