The New Jewel Movement (NJM) was a Marxist–Leninist party in Grenada led by Maurice Bishop. It seized power in a 1979 revolution, but was overthrown by a US invasion in 1983 after a coup and a civil war.
Maurice Bishop was a Grenadian revolutionary and the leader of the New Jewel Movement, a Marxist–Leninist party that came to power in 1979. He was deposed and executed in 1983 by his deputy Bernard Coard during a coup.
New Jewel Movement. Early in the morning of October 25, 1983, an invasion force numbering more then six thousand U.S. infantry and marines attacked by sea and air the tiny spice island of Grenada, southernmost of the Windward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean.
