Kloster Sanahin ist ein Kloster der Armenischen Apostolischen Kirche in der Nähe des gleichnamigen Ortes in der Provinz Lori im Norden von Armenien, das 966 gegründet wurde. Ebenso wie das in Sichtweite knapp vier Kilometer nordöstlich gelegene Kloster Haghpat wird es seit 1996 als UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe gelistet. [1]
Geografie. Sanahin liegt auf einem Plateau in Sichtweite von Haghpat, von dem es durch eine tiefe Schlucht getrennt ist, die ein kleiner Zufluss des Debed gegraben hat. The name Sanahin literally translates from Armenian as 'this one is older than that one', presumably representing a claim to being an older monastery than the neighbouring Haghpat Monastery, located about 3 kilometers to the east, with which it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The two monastic complexes of Haghpat and Sanahin are a serial property situated in the Lori Marz (region) of Armenia. Dating to the 10th to 13th centuries, the functional role, location and stylistic characteristics were taken into consideration during the construction of each new building.
Sanahin ( Armenian: Սանահին) is a district of the city of Alaverdi in the northern province of Lori in Armenia.
