Philosophy and Phenomenological Research was founded in 1940 by Marvin Farber, who edited it for forty years. Since 1980 it has been at Brown, where it has been edited by Roderick Chisholm and then, since 1986, by Ernest Sosa. From its founding, the journal has been open to a variety of methodologies and traditions.
In addi- tion to phenomenological research, PPR pub- lishes studies in a wide range of areas includ- ing ethics, logic, history of philosophy, metaphysics, and theory of knowledge, as well as applied ethics and the philosophies of art, history, language, mind, religion, and science.
The underlying research philosophy is phenomenology. It “studies the structure of various types of experience ranging from perception, thought, memory, imagi-nation, emotion, desire, and volition to bodily awareness, embodied action, and social activity, including linguistic activity” (Smith 2011).
Recent philosophy can be characterized by its change in attitude to the "Common Sense" view of the world. Rather than argue from principles which are purely a priori, philosophers nowadays are in-clined to start from things as they are.
