Liss, Hampshire. Liss (previously spelt Lys or Lyss) is a village and civil parish in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, 3.3 miles (5.3 km) north-east of Petersfield, on the A3 road, on the West Sussex border. It covers 3,567 acres (14 km 2) of semi-rural countryside in the South Downs National Park. [ 2 ]
Liss is one of the gateways to the South Downs National Park and has a small shopping area for visitors to enjoy. The village has its own railway station, on the Portsmouth Direct Line and has a wealth of history that dates back from the Iron Age.

There were people living here in the Neolithic times, with flint implements being discovered, as well as an Irish decorated axe and barrows dating all the way back to the Bronze Age.

The parish church, St Peter's, stands in West. It is a stone-built edifice built in the 13th century, replacing an earlier timber structure. Earliest times
Flint spearheads, arrowheads, scrapers, flakes and cores dating from Palaeolithic and Mesolithic times have been found,and Neolithic axe heads and flint implements. From the Bronze Age there is an Irish decorated axe and bracelets, and there are plentiful Bronze Age features on the chalk hangers above the village, and bowl barrows in the landscape. Traces of human and animal hair were found in a tree trunk coffin burial. There is evidence of Roman settlement in Liss too.
Middle Ages
In the late 9th century, King Alfred the Great created an Abbey at Lyss Place under the control of St Mary's Abbey at Winchester as a retreat for nuns. Local historians indicate their belief that St Peter's Church has Saxon footings, and that the remaining plan reflects an earlier Saxon Church on the site. Modernity
In about 1610, the manor and its former monastic house, Lyss Place, passed into private ownership and was subsequently held variously by the Cole, Fitzpatrick, Taylor and Hawkshaw families. Liss remained primarily an agricultural village in an open setting, but became known in the 19th century for the production of peppermint, an industry sponsored by the Money family of Stodham Park.
