The film is the first English language feature film depicting Ukraine's 1932–33 famine genocide, Holodomor, a period of massive famines the Soviet Union leader Stalin engineered that starved to death millions of mostly ethnic Ukrainians. The film stars Max Irons, Samantha Barks, Barry Pepper, Tamer Hassan, Lucy Brown and Terence Stamp.
In Bittere Ernte kämpfen zwei Liebende, Yuri und Natalka, darum, die Hungersnot in der Ukraine in den Jahren 1932–1933, zu überleben. Dabei nimmt der Film in der Bewertung der historischen Ereignisse die Position ein, dass es sich bei dem Holodomor um einen Völkermord unter Josef Stalin handelt.
