However, Marx himself rarely used the term "capitalism" while it was used twice in the more political interpretations of his work, primarily authored by his collaborator Friedrich Engels.

In Das Kapital, Marx, who never used the word imperialism, theorised that the bourgeoisie required “a constantly expanding market for its products.” • Subsequent Marxists, therefore agreed with Hobson’s linking of industrial capitalism and imperialism.
