He was born on January 5, 1940, in Colac, Victoria, Australia as Athol George Guy. Athol is easily recognizable by his black-framed “Buddy Holly” glasses, and, during live performances, often acts as the group’s compère.

In 1966, The Seekers (Judith Durham, Athol Guy, Bruce Woodley, Keith Potger) received the Carl Alan Award for Best New Group (1965) at the Top Of The Pops Awards, in London. In 1968, Potger and the other members of The Seekers were named jointly and severally Australians of the Year 1967.

Athol Guy, Bruce Woodley and Keith Potger formed the group in Melbourne in 1962 and were joined soon afterwards by lead singer Judith Durham. After a debut album in Australia, The Seekers travelled to the United Kingdom in 1964 and performed alongside Dusty Springfield, whose brother Tom subsequently wrote several of their hit singles.
