She always insists on having her own way, often getting into trouble, to the despair of one and all. But her mother is unbending and otherwise inclined.
All the children are well-produced and engaging. Some of the adults are strange choices, particularly Goldshifteh as Sophie's mother, who is nothing like the mother in the book. Sophie's father was a shadowy character in the book and is more so in the film. Nor can one imagine him marrying the appalling Mme Fichini, especially after Goldshifteh.
Director Christophe Honoré allows Sophie's anarchic free spirit to permeate the movie. And this spirit is perfectly embodied by the young Grant, who gives a star turn in the titular role. From Sophie's point of view, we also see the oppression some adults can put on kids, snuffing out their spark and imagination.
