Martha Bernays stammte aus einer angesehenen Hamburger Familie. Ihr Großvater, Isaac Ben Jacob Bernays, kam 1821 aus dem Raum Mainz nach Hamburg, wo er zum Oberrabbiner der Deutsch-Israelitischen Gemeinde gewählt wurde. Er war einer der ersten deutschen Rabbiner, die neben dem Talmud-Studium eine Universität besucht und Philosophie studiert hatten.
