Cobb in 1978 (Tom Hill/ WireImage) James “J.R.” Cobb, an original member of both The Classics IV and The Atlanta Rhythm Section, died Saturday, May 4, of a heart attack at the age of 75, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Cobb grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where he co-founded The Classics IV in 1965.
J.R. Cobb was an American guitarist and songwriter, most notable for co-writing “Spooky” and “Stormy” as a member of The Classics IV. He was also a founding member of The Atlanta Rhythm Section, a popular band in the 70’s…and even played behind the country supergroup The Highwaymen, for 5 years. Cobb has been inducted in both the Georgia and Alabama Music Halls of Fame.
James "J.R." Cobb also came on board on guitar along with Joe Wilson on keyboards. The band would soon change its name to The Classics. Yost took over vocals duties due to the strength and quality of his voice. When singing he would play his drums standing up.
