Das KZ Auschwitz-Birkenau wurde 1979 von der UNESCO mit dem später präziser gefassten Namen Auschwitz-Birkenau – deutsches nationalsozialistisches Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager (1940–1945) unter der Nr. 31 zum Teil des Weltkulturerbes erklärt. Das Kriterium dafür wurde so formuliert:
