Immersed in Music. Ray Charles Robinson was born in Albany, Georgia, on September 23, 1930. His mother, Retha Williams, raised him in the small rural town of Greenville, in northwest Florida. He endured grinding poverty in the Deep South at a time when Black Americans suffered the pervasive abuses of racism and Jim Crow segregation.
