Pere Ubu [pɛːr yby] ist eine US-amerikanische Rockband, die 1975 in Cleveland, Ohio, gegründet wurde. Ihr französischer Name ist Ubu roi, dem absurden Theaterstück Alfred Jarrys, und dessen Hauptfigur Père Ubu entlehnt.
Pere Ubu’s music exploited new technology, and in the 1990s the band released hybrid CD-ROMs that blended music, video, and text. Signing with smaller record labels seemed to inspire the group, and Ray Gun Suitcase (1995) and Pennsylvania (1998) were viewed by many as worthy additions to the band’s critically acclaimed oeuvre.
22. Sept. 2022 · When Rocket From the Tombs fell apart, Thomas wanted to at least have some kind of record of the band. The idea for the earliest Pere Ubu singles was to document what Thomas considers his best contributions to that earlier project—”Final Solution” and “30 Seconds Over Tokyo”—but along the way, “Heart of Darkness” appeared, too.
The Pere Ubu project was supposed to be an end, not a beginning. Assembled in August 1975 to be the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young of the Cleveland music underground, the plan was to record one, maybe two singles and exist no more. Within months, however, those first self-produced records were being snapped up in worldwide.
