If the rest of the film never quite lives up to its tablesetting, the mystery is involving enough, even with an ever-changing, unsettled tone. A really colourful supporting cast keep things interesting at every turn, and I never thought I would see William Powell knock out a dog after being savagely attacked in one of the best sequences.
