Von 1965 bis 1969 prägte er den damaligen Sound von James Brown, danach arbeitete er als Produzent und Arrangeur fürs Jazzlabel Kudu. 1979 begann eine längere Zusammenarbeit mit Van Morrison, mit dem er erst im Herbst 2019 wieder zusammen auf der Bühne stand.
