  1. George Read was born in Maryland in 1733, but his family moved to Delaware soon after his birth. He attended schools in Pennsylvania and studied law in Philadelphia. In 1754, he set up a legal practice in Delaware. He supported dignified protests against British actions and voted against independence in 1776, but did sign the Declaration.
