Jackson was the third child of Jonathan Jackson (1790–1826) and Julia Beckwith Neale (1798-1831). Orphaned at age seven, Jackson spent most of his childhood living with his uncle, Cummins Jackson.

Thomas Jonathan Jackson End of Life: Due to the gunshot wound that Thomas received after the return of his reconnaissance mission, his left arm had to be amputated. However, his body was unable to recover from the injury, and Thomas died of pneumonia on May 10, 1863. His funeral took place on May 15, 1863 in Lexington.
