Il participe au mouvement évangélique dans le diocèse de Meaux (1521-1523); ses convictions religieuses, proches de celles de Zwingli, l'obligent à émigrer.
Guillaume Farel naît à Gap (Dauphiné) d’une famille noble, fait des études à Paris, où il rencontre le savant humaniste Lefèvre d’Étaples. Il enseigne la grammaire et la philosophie. Il fait partie du Cénacle de Meaux qui, institué par l’évêque Briçonnet, propose de réformer l’Église depuis l’intérieur.
Guillaume Farel wurde in Gap im Dauphiné (Frankreich) als Sohn einer Adelsfamilie geboren. Während seines Studiums in Paris lernt er den humanistischen Gelehrten Lef?vre d’Étaples kennen. Farel unterrichtet Grammatik und Philosophie. 1521 geht er nach Meaux und arbeite dort im Kreis des Bischof Briçonnet mit, dessen Mitglieder die Kirche von innen heraus reformieren wollen.
