Political economist. Son-in-law, co-trustee and co-executor of John Mair of Clifton (q.v.). Nassau William Senior's wife Mary Charlotte inherited one-third of the estate of John Mair of Clifton, including mortgages over enslaved people. Apr. 2024 · Nassau William Senior (born September 26, 1790, Compton Beauchamp, Berkshire, England—died June 4, 1864, London) was a British classical economist who influenced the political and economic policies of his day. Senior was educated at Eton and at the University of Oxford, from which he graduated in 1812. He qualified as a lawyer in 1819.
Nassau William Senior defined value as “that quality in anything which fits it to be given and received in exchange.” Transferability or marketability, relative scarcity and utility are the three things that contribute value. Scarcity of a good is determined in relation to its demand. Thus he brings in both demand and supply to determine value. Demand rests on utility.
