It was his second release on the Atlantic label and features performances by Hubbard, James Spaulding, Bennie Maupin, Herbie Lewis, Roman “Dog” Broadus, Weldon Irvine, Kenny Barron, Freddie Waits, Louis Hayes, Howard Johnson, and Kiane Zawadi.
Hubbard gained fame playing with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (1961-1964) next to Wayne Shorter and Curtis Fuller. He recorded Ascension with Coltrane (1965), Out to Lunch (1964) with Eric Dolphy, and Maiden Voyage with Herbie Hancock, and, after a period with Max Roach (1965-1966), he led his own quintet, which at the time usually featured altoist James Spaulding. Overall a good sounding album that's suits the time; however, to me Freddie Hubbard sounded his best on the Blue Note and Pablo record labels. The natural heir to Clifford Brown and Lee Morgan was another prodigy, Freddie Hubbard (1938), whose pedigree included Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz (1960), several albums with Art Blakey (1961-66), also composing Up Jumped Spring (march 1962), several albums with Herbie Hancock (1962-65), Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch (1964), and John Coltrane's Ascension (1965).
