Die 18-jährige Erna spürt sogleich eine Seelenverwandtschaft mit dem deutschen Künstler. Er verbringt von 1918 bis zu seinem Tod 1936 den Sommer auf der Balmalp. Die von Babberger und seiner Gefährtin und Kollegin Erna Schillig genutzte Hütte auf der Balmalp wird zu einem Treffpunkt, der als „Urner Kreis“ in die Geschichte eingehen wird.
Während dieser Zeit führt seine Lebensgefährtin Erna Schilling die Geschäfte des Künstlers in Berlin weiter und pflegt dessen persönliche Kontakte in Deutschland. Im Mai 1918 errichtet Kirchner im Andenken an den im April 1917 verstorbenen Botho Graef für den Jenaer Kunstverein die Botho-Graef-Stiftung und schenkt der Institution über 250 Blatt Druckgrafik und Zeichnungen.
