Ammons formed his own band in 1934, and in 1938 performed in the Spirituals to Swing concert at Carnegie Hall, which among other achievements launched the boogie-woogie craze.

Ammons was perhaps more flexible than the other two, sounding just at home in swing settings. Johnson was probably the bluesiest of the trio and was the best accompanist as he showed with Turner, while Lewis had no difficulty adjusting his style to play Dixieland-type songs ...
