Er wuchs in Abilene (Kansas) unter ärmlichen Verhältnissen auf. 1915 schloss Eisenhower die Militärakademie ab. Ein Jahr später heiratete er Mamie Doud, mit der er zwei Söhne hatte, von denen einer in der Kindheit verstarb.
