Vaughan Williams’s Second Symphony – ‘A London Symphony’ - was composed between 1911 and 1913. RVW was 41 when it was first performed in London in March 1914. This was RVW’s own favourite amongst his symphonies. It opens quietly with an impressionistic vision - very Debussy-like - of London before day-break.
