Founded as two separate colleges for men (Hobart) and women (William Smith) in 1822 and 1908 respectively, they now operate as a coordinate system sharing faculty, resources, and a singular campus. Hobart and William Smith are known for their robust programs in international relations, public policy, and environmental studies among others.
Distinct from the major and minor, many students choose to pursue teacher certification while at the Colleges. Offerings include 15 NYS-registered teacher certification programs in elementary education and teaching students with disabilities (grades 1-6), in most secondary school subjects (grades 7-12), and in music, art, and TESOL (grades preK-12).
