The Latin name, Lycaon pictus, means "painted wolf" and refers to the animal's mottled coat. African wild dogs may be mostly solid-colored or painted with patches of black, brown, red, yellow, and white.
Behaviour: Wild dogs are social animals, they live in small packs and are mostly active about dawn and dusk. They make dens in hollow logs, caves or wombat burrows. Wild dogs can hunt successfully alone or in packs depending on the type of prey. An average home range or territory would be 100 square kilometres depending on the available resources.
They are also very popular for their well-rounded big ears and the white tip often spotted on their tails. The African wild dog is a canine, but unlike other dogs, it only has four toes per foot. The weight of adult wild dogs ranges from 18 to 36 kg (40 to 79 lb.). However, males are often slightly bigger than females.
