Jean de Lattre de Tassigny commanded the French ‘Army B’, later the 1st Army, which took part in the liberation of France as the largest French formation. On May 8th 1945 he represented France during the signing of the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany in Berlin-Karlshorst.
Born on the 2nd February 1889 in Mouilleron-en-Pareds, in the Vendée, into an old aristocratic family from French Flanders, Jean-Marie de Lattre de Tassigny received a first class education at Saint Joseph's college in Poitiers. Un événement tragique vient porter un coup terrible au moral du général de Lattre : Bernard, son fils unique, engagé en Indochine, trouve la mort à la bataille de Ninh Binh le 30 mai 1951. Son père ne s’en remettra pas. Atteint par un cancer de la hanche, Jean de Lattre décède à Neuilly-sur-Seine le 11 janvier 1952.
