Mary Arden Shakespeare was the mother of William Shakespeare the Great Bard. She lived between 1540 - 1608. Mary's father, Robert Arden, was a member of the noble Catholic family of the Ardens of Park Hall whose family forebears had been given land by William the Conqueror. Mary Arden was the youngest of eight daughters.

The strongest evidence might be a Catholic statement of faith signed by his father, John Shakespeare, found in 1757 in the rafters of his former house in Henley Street. However, the document is now lost and scholars differ as to its authenticity.
