Anatol Rapoport was born on May 22, 1911, in Lozovaya, Russia. He was an only child and was educated by his parents, Boris (b. 1888) and Adele (b. ~1886), both Rapoports (first cousins), themselves self-taught. Demonstrating an early aptitude for music, he began playing the piano at age five.
Anatol Rapoport died on January 20, 2007, in Toronto, Canada at the age of 95. The period of history Rapoport lived through from 1911 to 2007 bears witness to his deep under-standing of forgiveness as well as a fundamental commitment — to fostering — cooperation to resolve conflict and build peace.
